What is Fluorocarbon Fishing Main Line and How Does It Work?

Is mainline fluorocarbon different to fluorocarbon leader?

The main line and leader made of 100% fluorocarbon are not the same. While the breaking strength and diameter will be virtually identical, the lines' outside finish will be vastly different. This is because both the main line and the leader are used for a different functions.

Fluorocarbon leader is hardened, stiffened, and made significantly more abrasion-resistant during the manufacturing process.

Fluorocarbon mainline, on the other hand, goes through a chemical procedure that softens it. This also makes the main line version more susceptible to nicks, cuts, and abrasions from fish teeth and underwater structures.

Fluorocarbon main line must be castable and load neatly and uniformly into a spool.

Is fluorocarbon line low stretch?

Yes, fluorocarbon usually has little stretch and sinks fast in the water. Bite indication is improved with limited stretch lines. With fluoro, you'll be able to feel more of what's going on at the lure end of your fishing line.

Limited stretch is also significantly superior for hook setting, which is especially important when fishing at depth or with a lot of line out.

Because of fluorocarbon's sinking qualities, it's not necessarily the best line for topwater fishing with ultra-light lures. Fluorocarbon fishing lines, on the other hand, are commonly used for suspending baits at depth and jigging. It will sink faster than other fishing lines due to its density.

Can fish see fluoro underwater?

One of the greatest advantages of fluorocarbon mainline and leader is that it is difficult for fish to see. When it hits the water, the refractive index qualities of water result in the line to become virtually invisible. This makes it the ideal line and leader for fishing in clear water.

Fluoro is thicker, which implies it has a larger surface area as a trade-off. Fish do not need to see the line in order to 'sense' it. The higher the breaking strain fluoro line you use the more likely it is that you will lose your fluoro stealth edge.

Do fluorocarbon lines last longer?

Fluorocarbon lines have a long lifespan because they are not affected by UV light and do not absorb water, which degrades mono lines over time.

Fishing lines made of fluorocarbon are more resistant to abrasion than other lines. This signifies that the line is strong and not readily damaged.
