Spearfishing Spearguns for Australian Fishing

One of the most traditional and environmentally friendly methods of sport fishing is using a speargun to catch fish. It also goes well with free diving and snorkelling. The first spearguns were made of wood and rubber bands, but at Davos Tackle, we have a slightly more modern selection of spearguns from manufacturers like Cressiand Rob Allen.

What are the different types of Speargun?

Spearguns come in two options: Sling or Pneumatic.

The shaft of sling or band-powered spearguns is propelled through the water by a rubber bungee that is under tension. Due to their quiet operation and ease of upkeep, they are the most widely used spearguns on the market.

Pneumatic guns have an internal barrel that connects to a separate chamber that is filled to about 20bar of pressure. Pushing the spear into the barrel compresses the separate chamber, bringing it closer to the 35 bar required to fire the shaft.

What Size Speargun do I need?

The most popular spearguns in Australia are those with a 90 cm or 100 cm stock/barrel length. With a maximum effective range of 3 to 4 metres, this length gun will allow you to hunt and land quality reef and smaller pelagic species such as salmon, trevally, and whiting.

Close inshore work chasing smaller fish species may necessitate the use of a 75 cm speargun.

A serious Australian spearfisher will typically use a longer 130 cm speargun to target large species such as Kingfish and even Southern Blue Fin Tuna.
