Traditionally, it was all about cranking your handle and wildly winding and whipping your rod up and down in a crazy-like action; this technique is still used today and is incredibly effective in Australia. However, over the last decade, there has been a flood of fresh new approaches and Jigs for sale, resulting in a movement from the classic method to the likes of micro jigging, where gear has been reduced down in terms of rod and reel configurations, line class and jig size.
Slow jigging or lucanus jigging is a newer form of fishing in which you simply drop the lure overboard and slowly lift your rod up and down once you reach a certain depth. This type of jigging has also been known to be effective by simply placing your fishing rod in your boat's rod holders with lure attached and letting the boat and swell motion do all the work for you while you concentrate on other forms of fishing such as bottom bashing with bait.
Because the jig lure moves so differently to other fishing lures, it is critical to have the correct fishing rod to deal with it. You should have a rod that allows you to have more control over the lure, as well as one that gives you an obvious indication of a catch when it occurs.
Please keep in mind that unless using micro jigs, the jig lure should only be used to catch fish that are deeper in the water in Australia, which includes fish that are near or on the bottom. A different lure will be required if you wish to catch fish that hunt near the surface.
